Eudunda Bowls News 25th February 2024
The ladies endured hot, windy weather last Thursday at home against Freeling. Unfortunately, Freeling were overall winners 43-65. Doreen Twartz was challenged by Daniela Madalinski 14-23, Joy Hams faced the superb bowling of Leanne Mullins and her team 9-28, however Ruth Scoot was the shining light with an excellent win against Julie Campbell 20-14. After the game, all sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to Joy Hams to celebrate her 80th, and shared a birthday cake.
Thursday afternoon’s Division 1 played Kapunda (in very hot conditions under a tin roof!) and captured a narrow victory 57-54. Greg Prior had an impressive win against Brian Grant 24-17, Preston Eva had the skills and the ‘luck of the Irish’ to win against John Dermody 24-15, and both of these games were enough to cover Ian ‘Lumpy’ Griffiths’ battle with Greg Cruikshank 9-22.
Division 2 played Kapunda Red in a scorcher at Eudunda and won 60-47. Murray Sauer lost in a cliff-hanger to Mick Butler19-20, Ron Milde won with extra reinforcements from Queensland (a substitute) in Allan Mader (visiting brother Bill in Eudunda) against Joe Ryan 18-16, and Roy Fiegert continued his dream run this season with a win against Ron Hier 23-11.
During the match, George Mitev broke his arm (his metal bowling arm) which was taken to the engineering doctor and fixed! Also, during the match a few bowlers suffered from the heat, which was concerning without the consideration of a duty of care. The temperature at the venue was well above the BOM site Nuriootpa’s forecast temperature.
On Friday night (the beginning of the double-header weekend) Division 1 played Angaston at Angaston and finished 98-119, but in three of the four rinks Eudunda gave Angaston a shakeup! Aaron Jones got away to a flying start against Johno Voigt but Johno came back late in the game to end Aaron’s aspirations 29-34; Corey Achee in his first week’s skipper role downed David Jaunay 29-18, Kym ‘Chucka’ Schutz ‘bowled his head off’ to defeat Ian Elsworthy 30-22, however Bill Mader found the going tough against the impeccable bowling of Justin ‘Tiny’ Morris 10-45.
On Saturday, Division 1 played Lyndoch at Lyndoch and dashed their finals chances by going down 82-108. The shining light was Ian ‘Lumpy’ Griffiths who performed very well in the skipper’s position to defeat the talented Shaun Mahoney 31-19, Corey Achee had a great contest against Darren Green 18-26, Aaron Jones had the battle of the giants against Shane Marslen 17-27, and Kym ‘Chucka’ Schutz didn’t bowl as well as the night before, going down to Harry ‘the formidable’ Sykes 16-36.
Division 3 hosted Mount Pleasant and won 81-36 with all teams up. Gordon ‘Kiwi’ Teau had a great day against Noelene Birt 24-13, Ron Hams could still play bowls and win with two black eyes emerging 26-12 against Dot Holt, and Ruth Scoot and her dream team won 31-11 against Graeme Sloan.
Division 4 also played at Eudunda against Lyndoch Blue and kept their final’s hopes alive with a win 49-34. Pam Dutschke scored a ‘seven’ on the second-to-last end, and finished 28-20, while Roy Fiegert scored a ‘five’ on the last end to secure a win 21-14 against Sue Davis.
The Team of the Week was Ruth Scoot, Joy Hams, Judy Milde and Michael Upton.
