Still Time To Write To The Eudunda 150th Time Capsule
We Hope The Community Get Involved, To Tell Our Stories in 50 Years Time.
The Eudunda 150th Committee are inviting the Community to contribute to a Time Capsule to be opened in 50 years time. Some of our younger residents will likely be present to open the time capsule and discover the stories and memorabilia that we place in there at this time.
We would like to fill the capsule with letters from members of the Eudunda community and surrounding districts. If you would like to write a letter, we’d like you to detail your connection to Eudunda, any fond memories of the town, and your community involvement.
You can find details on our website, www.eudunda150.com
We hope you’re as excited as we are!
Why are we still asking for your contribution? As you are well aware. COVID-19 prevented us from having any celebrations in 2020. Fortunately the community have been able to celebrate with a ‘modified’ series of events in 2021, but the work on the time capsule was not able to be completed due to our our local constructor being unavailable to build the resting place for the time capsule in the Eudunda Centenary Gardens.
The Eudunda 150th Committee have taken advantage of this by asking more people to contribute to the time capsule.
Thank you to those who have already sent in stories!

Peter went on to tell a story about the photo and made a plea to others,
“Why did I choose this photo over others? For the Story I can see.
I was busy with 2 cameras so there was little in the way of “composing” the photo, it was by chance that I have this ‘Story’.
I find it amazing that The Governor SA Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC and her Husband Mr Rod Bunten have really adopted ‘Social Media’.
Social Media is one of the main forms of communicating with people, especially lots of people in recent years.
In this photo we see Mr Rod Bunten taking a photo to post on Instagram of Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC placing her letter in the Eudunda 150th Time Capsule during the Opening of the Eudunda 150th Celebrations at the Opening of the Eudunda Art Exhibition on the 5th Nov 2021. In support was Mayor Peter Mattey and Eudunda 150th Celebrations Chairperson Samuel Doering.
Behind the facts seen in this photo is an underlying story! That of the photo on the far right of F.G.E Appelt and Emilie Appelt. Emilie being the author of her diaries, that have now been bought to life with the book ‘The Diaries of Emilie Appelt’ by the book’s Editor Samuel Doering. The photo would have been taken circa 1916 and it has taken over 100 years for us to get a chance to glance into Eudunda’s rich past, thanks to the diaries translator Vida Hoopmann and Editor Samuel Doering. It should be noted that it probably took about 3 months to send a letter from thier ‘homeland’ of German to Eudunda, South Australia, and the same amount of time to reply.
By contrast, in the present we see Mr Rod Bunten taking the photo with his mobile phone, pushed a button and the photo would be quickly shared around the world, and it is possible for those receiving it to comment almost instantly too.
For the future: How challenging then is it that we, in the face of such fast developing technology, that we have resorted to “writing letters” and “printing photos” in an effort to communicate with the future, hoping they can still read it. Although only 50 years from now, we have little idea of what technology will be like then, and the most reliable communication may well still be the simple writing of a letter and printing of a photo.
I do hope though that people using social media for whatever reason, when they share a post, or a photo that they are not lazy, and that they take the time to write the story behind the photo so that the photo carries the valuable information to the future – of Who, Where and Why the photo was taken so future historians and families can understand what the photo was about, and the story behind it.”
We Hope YOU – Our Community Get Involved, To Tell Our Stories in 50 Years Time.
