The concert will feature “Ringing Through the Dark,” a new work composed by Burra local Jodie
O’Regan and featuring baritone Emlyn O’Regan. Jodie collaborated closely with the ensemble
members to create a piece that reflects their deep bond and the ensemble’s role in helping each
member navigate turbulent times, especially during the pandemic. “We persevered through
challenging times for our love of ringing and the community we have fostered,” said one
member. “Bells were the light that shone in the dark, the moon in a starless night, the harmony
in the chaos.”
A handbell ensemble can be likened to breaking apart a piano keyboard and giving each
musician a few notes. The teamwork required to perform with musicality is immense: each
individual must play their notes precisely, responding to each other to create a unified sound.
Though handbells first emerged in England in the 1700s, the skills demonstrated by the SA
Youth Handbell Ensemble are just as relevant and vital today.
